Transdermal Gels

Transdermal Gels

At VetMedics Compounding Pharmacy, one of our dosage forms is transdermal gels.

What are transdermal gels?

“Transdermal” means the application of a medication through the skin. “Gel” is a cream-like substance that can be applied topically. Put them together and you get the use of our transdermal gels. The transdermal preparation is applied to the inside of the animal’s ear (pinna) or another hairless area as an alternative route for systemic absorption. Most medications for pets can be specially compounded by our experienced compounding team into a gel that can be easily applied to a pet’s skin.

How are transdermal gels administered?

Transdermal gels are applied directly to the skin of the inside hairless flap of the ear (pinna) or other hairless area, such as the inside of the thigh.

How do transdermal gels work?

Once applied to the inside flap of the ear, the medication is then delivered through the skin into the capillaries located in the ear. It is then easily absorbed into the bloodstream.

What are the advantages of using transdermal gels to give animals their medication?

There are two main advantages of using transdermal gels for pets.
First, many animals simply refuse to swallow pills or take a liquid medication. Even if oral medication is disguised in food, pets might eat right around it. For pets like this, transdermal gels can lead to increased compliance and end up as a great solution.
Second, giving medicine via transdermal gels means that the medication is easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Thus, because the medication bypasses the stomach and intestines, there is less of a chance of GI upset, and in many instances, an increase in efficacy.

How are transdermal gels given to animals?

At VetMedics Compounding Pharmacy, we recommend administering transdermal gels via transdermal pens. By using these, a consistent measured dose of medicated cream can be applied directly to the skin.
Transdermal pens are extremely accurate, easy to use and convenient. Each pen indicates the measure of dose through each administration, so you know exactly how much medication you used, as well as how much you have left. One-click of the pen dispenses a certain amount of medication, which makes it quite easy to customize and adjust doses.
