Injectables
At VetMedics Compounding Pharmacy, one of our dosage forms is injectables.
What are injectables?
Injectables are medications inserted into an animal’s skin through a needle.
Why use injectables to give animals their medication?
Certain medical conditions can be controlled by using medications that may only be available in an injectable form. Two of these conditions are diabetes (which oftentimes requires daily insulin injections) and certain allergies (which can oftentimes be controlled by regular injections of allergenic extracts).
How do pets receive injectables?
Injectables are given in the subcutaneous tissue. “Subcutaneous” simply means “under the skin.” This tissue is looser in dogs and cats than in people and can easily be pinched in order to receive the injectable. The contents of the syringe can be administered quickly and easily before simply withdrawing the needle. After a gentle massage of the area, pets generally feel no pain.
If pets are wiggly, it is a good idea to offer him or her a treat or food as a distraction while the injectable is being administered. Most pet owners discover that their pet becomes more cooperative for these injectables over time and eventually does not seem to notice them.
Injectables can generally be given by a veterinarian or a pet owner. If you decide to provide this treatment to your pet, your veterinarian will review the technique and make sure that you are totally comfortable administering the injectable on your own.
Are injectables sterile and safe for pets?
Yes. At VetMedics Compounding Pharmacy, we compound sterile preparations — including injectables — in our state-of-the-art ISO Class 5 sterile suite. All injectables are sterilized using methods that are appropriate for each individual medication.
Are injectables painful?
Most dogs and cats do not mind injections. The needles are disposable and meant for only one use, which means that the tip of the needle is very sharp, which helps minimize pain. Veterinarians can prescribe the appropriate needles and syringes for each pet’s unique needs.
